Description
Nor not! Possibly a sexton blake 'au plain air' photo realist painting. The pipes we're invented by the Irish and given to the Scots as a practical joke.... and the Scots haven't seen it yet!
There was, and may still be, a Laird's Estate somewhere in the western highlands of Scotland the Laird of which had a duty to maintain a piper, who, every year, would be paid one penny; the so called 'Penny Loss' and for that would have to lay for the Laird a 'pibroch' or traditional solo piper's tune with variations played usually for ceremonial purposes such as 'salutes' , 'gatherings' or 'laments'. The exchange was also ceremonial:
Laird: "I have come to give you the Penny Loss and hear from you a pibroch."
Piper: "I accept the Penny Loss and will play for you a pibroch called... (names one of the accepted tunes)" [Piper then plays elaborate solo several minutes long.]
Note that He who paid the Piper did not 'call the tune'! The piper calls the tune; except when it came to the 'Tunes Of Glory' referred to by Alec Guinness at the end of the film [1hr. 36min 58 sec. et seq.]
