Tonight I watched what was said to be an eagerly awaited update on a loved TV series, "Gilmore Girls". It seemed to paint exactly what seems to be happening in the USA and elsewhere. The show is very fast and full of witty, cynical one liners. It is great fun but half way through what became clear is that the people in this series feel uprooted and seem not to live in the real world any more. They are all perfect liberals but they no longer know what it really means.

Their town looks like summerland - that golden place where the dead are said to go if you believe Theosophists, Wiccans and some earth-based contemporary pagan religions in their conceptualization of an afterlife. You would be surprised how many western people believe in a place like Stars Hollow, where the Gilmore Girls live.

What we seemed to be watching is people who are incredibly wealthy compared to the immigrant servants who take over the grand-mother's house. The joke is that nobody knows where they came from or what they speak but the immigrant servants keep filling up the house with new people and new children. We see an American WASP class completely befuddled by having been waited on hand and foot by immigrants and now they think the immigrants are taking over the country. The grandmother remains perfectly PC, not caring who these people are because she has a house and they can stay. Yet she does not know what these people are doing with her possessions or even what they feed her to eat. She is their ward, rather than she being in power over them. One senses a great deal of American anxiety about just such situations taking over the country, which they have no idea how to control or stop.

The 'girls' - a mother and daughter - are pressed into various scams like looking at hiring a surrogate mother despite the fact that the woman wanting to have a child could carry it herself. She wouldn't wish to give birth twice, already having a daughter. This daughter is brilliant but is a Yale dropout to her mother's distress. Daughter is now a writer, published once in an upmarket magazine but luck eludes her and she travels ever further to try to get a story or a job.

All the characters seem to be living in a perfect place that is deadly. None of the characters appear to believe in anything and are swayed by liberal ideas without analysing them.  Life is too easy and none of them known what grafting or struggling is. They are all spoilt, vapid, hardly ever think, work hard but pointlessly because their work does not engage them. They do it automatically, apart from one cafe owner who seems more grounded than the others.

By the end of the first in the new series the viewer is left utterly depressed. These people endlessly flick through their phones as if their essence is in that little mechanism. They have no connection with nature in the way of being gardeners, carers, teachers or anything that wrestles with human reality. They look good. They don't believe in religion so have no allegiance to anything apart from themselves. They're sharp and smart and cute and totally empty - very much the denizens of  the summerland they live in. They are ethereal creatures which an economic downturn could quickly wipe out. They are living their own fantasy and so far have managed to continue. Let's see what 2017 will bring.

Judging by this piece of popular art, the west is portrayed as being too self indulgent, set in its ways, too ignorant and stupid to even be able to understand what is happening or knowing what to do. They are in a dream. The whole era of liberalism our parents fought so hard to attain is now a  hollow hallucination devalued and debased and worthy only of wise cracks.
