Description
Skaffen-Amtiskaw is a Culture drone who works alongside Diziet Sma in Special Circumstances. Together they 'ran' Cheradenine Zakalwe, a mercenary soldier salvaged from an alien military hospital, then rehabilitated and set to work by the covert operations arm of the Culture on non-Culture planets they wish to 'civilise', pacify or otherwise bring under control. Highly valued because of his skill amounting to military genius in the 'Use Of Weapons' www.theguardian.com/books/2012… , Zakalwe's mind conceals a dark secret, even from its owner.
[In the article linked to, the reviewer is not sure Banks played fair in setting up the ending. I reread the book myself to see if this is true and it's not. Banks did play fair, but you have to read very carefully. If you have read 'Use Of Weapons' you would definitely enjoy Surface Detail, the latest Culture novel . There have been at least two published since Excession came out, the penultimate one being Look To Windward, which deals with the fall out from a centuries old Culture 'mistake' on the part of one of its 'minds'.]

All of Banks' writing, SF and more traditional fiction, is brilliant and rewards re-reading. The only one I couldn't get into was the one that supposedly made his reputation as a serious novelist in Britain, The Wasp Factory.
We must have read a lot of the same SF, etc; I enjoy so many of your references.
